Berkeley Electric Cooperative is governed by a policy-making board of nine trustees who are members of the cooperative and who are elected by their fellow members. The trustees serve terms of three years each. These trustees are elected on a rotating basis at the Annual Meeting of Members, and exercise all of the powers of the Cooperative, except those reserved to the members, according to the bylaws of Berkeley Electric Cooperative.

How to run for the board

Berkeley Electric Cooperative accepts nominations for three board seats each year.

Potential candidates must be members in good standing and reside in the district for the seat they are running for. They must also submit a petition with the signatures of at least 50 active Berkeley Electric Cooperative members at least 60 days before the Annual Meeting date. Please contact your local district office for information on how to obtain an official candidate petition form and the specific deadline for the current year.

Board Compensation

Board members are not cooperative employees and do not receive a salary. However, they are rightly compensated for their time and reimbursed for their expenses in service to the cooperative. They receive a per diem payment for attending meetings, continuing education programs, and other such duties.

As a not-for-profit utility, Berkeley Electric Cooperative is required to make a copy of Form 990 available, which can be found for free on the Internal Revenue Service website.
